Association between Out-door Temperature Fluctuation and Preterm Birth

Abstract
The objective of the study was to examine the association between preterm-birth and the fluctuation range of out-door temperature. The birth data were obtained from 1998 birth certificate data of National Statistical Office of Korea. Incidence rate of preterm birth was 3.1 percent in total singleton birth of Seoul metropolitan city (130,335 cases). Local climatologic data on daily mean temperature of Seoul metropolitan city were obtained from Korea Meteorological Administration. The rate of preterm-birth increased in the extreme fluctuation phase of mean temperature as compared with the preceding each day. But the rate of preterm birth was not significant statistically between extreme fluctuation of temperature and uniform fluctuation of temperature. This study dose not suggest any risk of preterm birth for pregnant women exposed to the extreme fluctuations of temperature as compared with the preceding each day. However, the current world-wide climate change is likely to increase health impacts, resulting in more frequent extreme fluctuations of out-door temperature and so on.
